{"id":45154,"date":"2017-09-28T11:05:45","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T07:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/1905.az\/en\/?p=45154"},"modified":"2017-09-28T11:05:45","modified_gmt":"2017-09-28T07:05:45","slug":"over-3000-people-become-victims-of-mines-uxo-in-azerbaijan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/1905.az\/en\/over-3000-people-become-victims-of-mines-uxo-in-azerbaijan\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 3,000 people become victims of mines, UXO in Azerbaijan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>More than 3,000 people have been victims of mine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Azerbaijan according to rough estimates, Hafiz Safikhanov, chairman of the Public Union \u201cAzerbaijan Anti-Mine Campaign\u201d, told\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apa.az\/\">APA<\/a><span>\u00a0on Wednesday.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1905.az\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hafiz-sefixanov.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of them, nearly 500 victims died while the others remained alive,\u201d he said, noting that it is difficult to announce a concrete number of victims of mines and UXO in Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n<p>Safikhanov said that so far, the Public Union has rendered psychological and legal support to victims from eight districts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project on creating economic conditions for mine victims was carried out in Tovuz, Tartar and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.apa.az\/tag\/Fuzuli\">Fuzuli<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>districts where the number of victims of mines and UXO is higher. Three mine victims who are in a difficult situation were provided with aid in Tovuz, Tartar and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.apa.az\/tag\/Fuzuli\">Fuzuli<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>district,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The public union chairman also provided detailed information about the latest report of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines \u2013 a Coalition of organizations against cluster munitions.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the Convention on Cluster Munitions was signed by 119 countries. \u201cSome 102 countries completed the ratification process.\u00a0 Seventy-six countries, including the South Caucasian countries, have not yet joined the Convention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report revealed the use of cluster munitions by Syria\u2019s government forces and the Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen, Safikhanov added.<\/p>\n<p>According to rough estimates, nearly 56,000 people in 33 countries became the victims of these weapons, he said. \u201cThe report says that Azerbaijan is unable to join the convention since part of its territory is occupied by the armed forces another country. No facts of manufacturing, use and export of cluster munitions were recorded in Azerbaijan.
