El reino <em>estaba<\/em>situado \u00a0en el territorio <em>alrededor del lago Urmia<\/em>y a lo largo del r\u00edo Araz (actual Azerbaiy\u00e1n del Sur, Kurdist\u00e1n iran\u00ed, y algunas zonas de Azerbaiy\u00e1n del Norte en diferentes per\u00edodos). Seg\u00fan las fuentes antiguas, en los a\u00f1os 20 del siglo III, \u00a0durante el reinado del rey Artabazanes,\u00a0 Atropatene abarcaba el territorio ubicado al Norte del r\u00edo Araz hasta el r\u00edo Rioni e inclu\u00eda algunas partes de Iberia. En 244, Atropatene fue capturado\u00a0 por el rey sas\u00e1nida Sapor I.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/1905.az\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/atropatena-32.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7543\" src=\"http:\/\/1905.az\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/atropatena-32.jpg\" alt=\"atropatena-3\" width=\"559\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/1905.az\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/atropatena-32.jpg 559w, https:\/\/1905.az\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/atropatena-32-300x257.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>En persa medio (pahlavi) este reino se conoc\u00eda como Aturpatakan\u00a0 (&#8220;protegido por el fuego&#8221;) y era parte integrante del Imperio sas\u00e1nida del siglo III. La noci\u00f3n de Azerbaiy\u00e1n, as\u00ed como los eventos y procesos pol\u00edticos y etno-culturales, ocurridos aqu\u00ed, \u00a0surgieron en el per\u00edodo de Atropatene.
