The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs will visit the region on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the ceasefire agreement on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, said U.S. Co-Chair James Warlick while delivering a speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“We will mark the 20th anniversary of the ceasefire agreement. We can be proud that we have prevented an escalation of the conflict. However, we have to admit that the status quo is unacceptable and unstable. Never-ending negotiations, violence, isolation of the people living in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan’s dissatisfaction and anger of the IDPs can’t be a recipe for peace and stability and it isn’t a way of the prosperity. People of the region deserve the best,” said Warlick.

He said that an agreement on long-lasting and stable peace should meet the interests of both sides.

“I’ve heard more encouraging statements in the capitals of both countries, the presidents are trying to achieve progress. Both of them agree that the document being discussed in the past few years covers all the elements of a final agreement. The U.S. called on both presidents to meet in the near future and use all the opportunities to achieve peace,” added Warlick.
