Fuzuli district (Garyagyn district in 1930-59) – administrative district in the Republic of Azerbaijan. Established in 1930. Bordered with the Islamic Republic of Iran in southern-east. Area is 1390 km², population is 147.1 thousand people (01.01.2006). Center is Fuzuli town.
The district is consisted of Fuzuli town, Horadiz settlement, 11 settlements, Ahmadbayly, Bala Bahmanly, Araz-Zargar, Araz Dilagharda, Birinji Mahmudlu, Ikinji Mahmudlu, Ahmadalilar, Gazakhlar, Mirzanaghily, Ashagy Kurdmahmudlu, Yukhary Kurdmahmudlu, Alkhanly, Boyuk Bahmanly, Karimbayly, Aratayly, Babi, Mollamaharramly, Horadiz, Ashaghy Seyidahmadly, Shukurbayly, Yukhary Seyidahmadly, Gorgan, Shakarchik, Shikhly, Gejagozly, Uchunju Mahmudlu, Ashaghy Veysally, Yukhary Veysally, Sarajig, Yukhari Rafadinli, Gorazilly, Garadaghly, Yukhary Guzlak, Khatunbulag, Gajar, Divanalilar, Garakhanbayly, Merdinly, Gochahmadly, Arish, Mollavali, Dadaly, Ishigly, Garghabazar, Yal Pirahmadly, Dilagharda, Gobu Dilagharda, Garvand, Yukhari Abdurrahmanly, Kurdlar, Ashagy Abdurrahmanly, Dordchinar, Seyidmahmudlu, Alasgarly, Huseynbayly, Pirahmadly, Musabayly,Mandily, Ashagy Guzlak, Ashagy Rafadinly, Uchbulag, Juvarly, Khalafsha, Chiman, Yukhari Aybasanly, Dovlatyarly, Ashagy Yaghlivand, Garakollu, Gocshatly, Hajily, Mirzajamally and Zarfar villages.
Landscape of the district is plain inclined to Aras river, and mountainous in the west ( southern-east foots of Karabakh range). Mainly, Tabashir, Neogen and Anthropogenic sediments are apparent. Climate is dry-mild. Average temperature is 0-1°C in January and 24-25°C in July. Annual rainfall is 400-600 mm. Rivers belong to the basin of Aras river, which flaws from the border with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Landscape is gray. Plant cover is semi desert. Animals: wolf, jackal, fox, wild boar, porcupine and etc. Birds: turaj, pheasant, pigeon and etc.
Fuzuli is the district of industry and agriculture. There are cotton-growing, butter -cheese and ferro-concrete plants, group of grain products, weaving plant, quarry, grape producing enterprises, over 100 large production enterprises and etc.
There are 80 high schools, 2 techical industrial school, 22 kindergartens, 12 music schools, 19 clubs, 2 museums, 32 libraries, 10 hospitals, 16 medical points, 9 medical attendants points in Fuzuli.
A lot of historical-archeological monuments, as well as, ancient residences and kurgans ( The New Stone Age, the Bronze Age), tombs ( 13th and 18th centuries), mosques (17th, 18th and 19th centuries), caravansarai (1684) still remain there.
On August 23, 1993 the district was occupied by Armenian armed forces.
