President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has received credentials of the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Iceland Berglind Asgeirsdottir.
Ambassador Berglind Asgeirsdottir reviewed a guard of honor.
Berglind Asgeirsdottir presented her credentials to President Ilham Aliyev.
The Azerbaijani President then spoke with the ambassador.
The head of state expressed his hope that Berglind Asgeirsdottir will regularly meet with heads of relevant authorities in Azerbaijan and hold talks to define prospects for cooperation between the two countries. President Ilham Aliyev emphasized good opportunities for developing relations in political area and expanding cooperation within international organizations. The head of state also highlighted the possibility of establishing relations in trade and tourism spheres, saying that the existence of wonderful tourism destinations in both Iceland and Azerbaijan provides a good opportunity for it.
Ambassador Berglind Asgeirsdottir said she is pleased to come to the capital of Azerbaijan, describing Baku as a very charming and attractive city. The ambassador said she is deeply impressed by the architecture of the city. Noting that the goalkeeper of Iceland`s national football team Hannes Tur Halldorsson was transferred to Azerbaijan’s Qarabag FC, the ambassador said this goalkeeper became famous during the FIFA World Cup. Berglind Asgeirsdottir added that the goalkeeper`s transfer to Qarabag FC aroused the Icelanders` great interest in Azerbaijan.
Ambassador Berglind Asgeirsdottir stressed the necessity of determining directions of further development of relations between the two countries, adding that there are good opportunities for cooperation between Iceland and Azerbaijan in various fields.
