Falsification of the history, distortion of the historical facts and turning Armenia into a mono-ethnic state by changing the toponyms in the historical Azerbaijani lands are part of the aggressive policy of Armenia. In this way thousands of the Azerbaijani toponyms were erased from the map in Armenia in 1935-1989.
After the election of M. Gorbachev Secretary-General of the Political Bureau of the CC CPSU in 1985, who sympathized the Armenians, activated the dreams of “Great Armenia”.
The last ethnic cleansing of the Azerbaijanis in Armenia in 1988-1993 was carried out with an unprecedented brutality; 250 thousand of our compatriots were expelled from their ancestral lands and turned into refugees. Even in the 1828s-30s the Armenians, who were settled in the central part of Azerbaijan, that is, in the Nagorno-Karabakh with the help of Russia, repeatedly tried to separate Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan.
In 1988 the Armenian armed forces with the help of their supporters raised again the issue of annexation of the Nagorno-Karabakh, an integral part of Azerbaijan. As a result of the military aggression of Armenia in 1988-1993 20 percent of the Azerbaijani territory – the Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent districts (Agdam-on July 23, 1993, Fuzuli- on August 23, 1993, Lachin-on May 18, 1992, Qubadli-on August 31, 1993, Jabrayil- on August 23, 1993, Zangilan-on October 29, 1993, Kalbajar-on 2 April, 1993.) were occupied. Over one million of Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced persons. In this period we witnessed one of the most tragic events of the twentieth century.
The town of Khojaly with 6,000 population in the Nagorno-Karabakh was razed from the map within a night by the Armenian armed forces with the help of the Soviet troops, 613 civilians, including 106 women, 63 children, 70 old men were killed, over 1000 people were injured, 1,275 persons were captivated, 8 families were completely slaughtered, 56 people were cruelly burned alive, beheaded, blinded.
Including Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions, 1 of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, 80 of Agdam, 54 of Fuzuli, 13 of Tartar and 7 villages of Kazakh region are still under occupation.
There had been 11 thousand “refugee” status claimants (asylum seekers) in Azerbaijan. The vast majority of those persons, who are currently 1767 people, are Russian citizens of Chechen origin, people from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Palestine. Thus, at present there are one million refugees and internally displaced persons and refugees in Azerbaijan.
